Rhayader & District Community Support Transport Scheme

We manage the Voluntary Community Car Transport Scheme. We recruit and train volunteers to drive clients to primarily but not exclusively health-related appointments, excluding emergency and cancer patients. From July 2006 – June 2007 our volunteers completed in excess of 11,000 miles. 

We also run the Community Mini Bus which provides access for community members who are unable to use existing means of transport through age, disability or a mental / physical condition. In July 2004 a Big Lottery grant was awarded to RDCS to purchase and run the mini bus for three years. This grant has been extended for a further three years from July 2008 to include a ‘Well Being Club’

The freedom provided by this service has made a huge difference to many local people’s lives. The funding awarded by Big Lottery in 2008 to continue, expand and improve the existing service will encourage use by younger socially isolated citizens of Rhayader & district.

The mini bus presently does 76 journeys a week, 30 trips a year & has a membership of 124 individuals and 30 groups (who book the bus 50 times a year).

2008 also saw us purchase a smaller wheelchair accessible vehicle which is allowing us to expand the service whilst saving fuel and resources when passenger demand is low. However with the rising costs of fuel, we anticipate demand on both the services we provide to increase.

We are presently looking to recruit additional voluntary car drivers who get a mileage allowance to cover their costs. Comments from existing drivers tell us how much they enjoy helping actual people and the feeling of being appreciated and making a real difference….not to mention the variety of people they meet, who often have informative and interesting tales to tell. The journeys range from local doctors visits to medical appointments in Hereford, Cardiff and occasionally further afield.
